Barnes honoured for commitment to club and community
A True Rotarian
AMHERST - To many in the Amherst Rotary Club, Bob Barnes is Mr. Fellowship.
The veteran Rotarian often organizes fellowship events meant to bring Rotarians closer together while extending ties to other Rotary clubs and the communities they serve. For this, the co-founder of Barnes Insurance has been presented a True Rotarian Award by the Amherst Rotary Club and District Governor Bette Douglas.
"I was truly shocked when I learned of this over the weekend. I am so honoured and so appreciative of this," Barnes told club members after being presented the award.
Born in 1926, Barnes graduated from high school in Amherst in 1944. He worked in the Amherst wartime aircraft industry and later entered the insurance industry in the fall of 1947.
Barnes took a break from the insurance industry to work for the aircraft division of Enamel and Heating for nine years before going back into insurance and joining with Garry Stack to co-found Barnes Insurance in 1989.
He joined the Amherst Rotary Club in 1970 and remains today one of its longest serving members. He paid tribute to former Rotarian and Amherst mayor, the late Walter Purdy, for inviting him into Rotary.
Besides Rotary, Barnes has been active in the community through the school board, the former Amherst recreation commission and the Downtown Amherst Revitalization Society.
He has also been active with Trinity-St. Stephen's United Church, Ship's Company Theatre in Parrsboro, the Parrsboro Golf Club and Parrsboro's harbour commission.
His lifelong interest in aviation continues to this day and he has been a licensed pilot for 20 years or more. He's also an avid golfer and bridge player.
"When you think of Bob Barnes and Rotary you think of fellowship," Rotarian Morris Haugg said while making the presentation. "He's chaired that committee for I don't know how long and he'll continue to lead it for many years to come."
The True Rotarian, presented by the district governor, is given to a Rotarian who best exemplifies the principles and spirit of Rotary.
