People going to closed ER instead of calling 911

PUGWASH - For the 39th time since January, the emergency department at the North Cumberland Memorial Hospital in Pugwash will be closed because of a lack of a physician.

The hospital will be closed for 12 hours on Thursday beginning at 8 a.m. because there is no physician available to provide the necessary medical coverage.

However, while ER closures are becoming all too common in Pugwash, officials with the Cumberland Health Authority are concerned with the number of people putting their lives at risk by going to the hospital anyway.

Weve had reports of people going either to the hospital or the doctors offices when the ER is closed, authority spokesperson Ann Keddy said. Theyre risking their own health if they dont call 911 in an emergency. If its an emergency call 911; if its not, call your doctors office and make an appointment.

When the ER is closed, those needing emergency care can call 911, but some people still come to the hospital hoping to avoid the $128 ambulance cost associated with transportation to either the Lillian Fraser Memorial Hospital in Tatamagouche or the Cumberland Regional Health Care Centre in Upper Nappan.

Keddy said there have also been cases of some people going into doctors offices and demanding to be seen.

Individuals should not go to a closed emergency department expecting to receive emergency medical care, she said. It is also not appropriate to go to the physicians office, private residence or attempt to locate an individual physician elsewhere in the community to request emergency medical treatment.

Keddy said the authority is continuing to try to address the chronic physician shortage in Pugwash by trying to recruit at least one additional doctor. A nurse practitioner has been hired for the community and should begin offering primary care services soon.

The authority hopes to establish a Cumberland North Rural Practice Network similar to whats in place in the Parrsboro-Advocate-River Hebert areas where nurse practitioners work in concert with physicians to deliver care.
