HALIFAX - From transparent windows to hidden maple leafs, the new Nova Scotia birth certificate bears almost no resemblance to its predecessor.
It's not even made out of paper.
But starting Dec. 3, the government says Nova Scotia will have the most secure birth certificate in the world. Its over 20 security features will soon become the Canadian standard as the other provinces follow suit.
Service Nova Scotia MinisterJamie Muir said Monday that birth certificates ''are one of the most sought-after documents by those involved in identity theft and fraud.''
''The new birth certificate uses state-of-the-art security features to better protect our identity.''
More of a sheet than a card, the new certificate is made of a durable polymer material that can survive a trip through the washing machine. It's features include raised printing, hidden images and a bar code.
