Battalion Wars 2 is a patchwork of sorts, a combat collage fused with an amusing storyline, quirky characters, and comical but brilliantly detailed animations. It seems incongruous to have those elements together but it works well.

This is a highly entertaining game set around a horrific topic. But beyond the graphic gore it is simply a fun challenge. BWii begins with a flashback to a series of conflicts centuries earlier, when an armour-clad army known as the Iron Legion swept through the free nations of the world, conquering and colonizing them for Xylvania. That is, until one reluctant civilization, the Solar Empire, harnessed the power of the sun with a doomsday device and incinerated the bad guys. The power-rod was then tossed into a crevasse and hidden so it would never fall into the wrong hands again.

Generations later, a new ruler in Xylvania, Kaiser Vlad, launched his bid for global conquest. The wars that followed, resulting in Vlads defeat, were documented in BWi.

Flash-forward to the present day and rumours of a new super-weapon are circulating, fingering the Solar Empire. Other countries, fearing an invasion have begun to mobilize forces and initiate preemptive strikes.

Tricked into believing there is an imminent threat, the English forces led by a pair of naive and gullible wankers named Commander Pierce and Colonel Windsor, initiate a Pearl Harbor-like sneak attack that sinks the Solar Empires naval force and sets everything in motion. The world is once again at war.

You must defend the Solar Empire using the games superb tactical controls to direct your troops, who are grouped according to specialized attacks. The explosions are fantastic and the weapons will make you giddy, theyre so loud and big. Only the games A.I. is a little daft, unable to recognize danger when its falling on top of either the enemy or your own troops. Maybe thats why you dont feel sorry for them when they die.
