RIVER HEBERT - For years now, the students of River Hebert Elementary School have been doing their part for cancer research.

Every year, these students can be seen walking with parents and teachers along the stretch of River Hebert known as Barronsfield Road to the home of Mr. and Mrs. Albert Arseneau, where they rest and have a refreshment, then begin their walk back to the school.

These students, eager to play their part, walk along two-by-two, taking turns carrying signs announcing their mission. As cars go by this parade, the drivers and passengers wave and honk to the students in support of the cause.

The young students from Primary to Grade 6 have raised over $2,000 consistently on an annual basis.

What you are doing here today is very important, encouraged Don Gamblin, principal of RHES.

You are not only walking in honour of Terry Fox but you are helping others to find a cure for cancer and that is such an important thing to do, you should all be proud of yourselves.

Grade 4 teacher Charlene Daborn presented Lillian Bray, with a Terry Fox T-shirt in honour of todays walk on behalf of the school. Bray is a former Grade 2 teacher at RHES for 34 years and for the past nine years is a cancer survivor.

I am not the hero here today, these children are. They continue the fight every year, Bray said.

They are the real heroes

Making sure you get help for cancer is key and Bray has many recommendations for those who may have issues.

Early detection is a big key, know yourself, take your health in your hands, dont leave things unchecked and it is crucial to know your family health history encourages Bray

Cancer is an emotional issue that some people have trouble talking about. But dont be it really helps to talk. When I was diagnosed with cancer, talking about it was very important to me. It helped me deal with it and it doesnt get worse by talking about it.
