Fire Prevention Week: Teaching the young

OXFORD Children are taking the onus on themseleves to keep their families safe.

Thats why students at Oxford Regional Elementary School are devising escape plans to ensure everyone will get out of their homes in the event of a fire.

Their expertise in carrying out drills of this nature was evident during a Fire Safety Week fire drill held Oct. 12 at ORES.

The students set a record for evacuating the school today, in one minute and 14 seconds, Tory Rushton, Oxfords fire chief, said.

On average, schools are generally around a minute and a half and they were far below this. The teachers tell me they have done a few drills here on their own and the students have been under a minute, which is incredible, he added.

This allows the firefighters to get on site and battle blazes and not have to worry about searching facilities to evacuate people.

Students in Grade Primary to Grade 3 returned to the school and went directly to the gym where Oxford firefighter Lieut. Ken Hickman presented the ABCs of fire safety to the children and had them practise fire safety manouveurs that included stop, drop and roll should their clothing catch fire.

The firefighters announced to the students plans for a contest using the theme of Fire Prevention Week of Your Escape Plan which will see all the students go home and devise an escape plan, map it out and submit it to the contest.

We have a special guest speaker coming in on Oct. 29 in Michael Gaulois, a burn victim survivor from Newfoundland, Rushton said.

He will look at all the entries from the elementary school and the high school and choose a winner. We have special surprise prizes for the winners.

It has been several years since a contest of this nature or students in either school have done an escape plan exercise and Rushton feels this will enhance the safety of the community.
