AMHERST  As the $2.49-million Growing Care Campaign enters the final stretch, the Cumberland Health Care Foundation is looking to reduce wait times by purchasing a new ultrasound for the regional hospital.

The routine ultrasound machine will benefit patients undergoing investigation for abdominal and breast cancer, examinations of extremities for blood clots, thyroid conditions and pregnancy. The improved technology will also enhance the ability to spot bowel and stomach cancer earlier while digital imaging equipment upgrading also helps improve patient care.

Right now we have just one unit thats really unacceptable for a hospital this size. We need two units to meet the demand. Periodically we have two technologists, but we just have one machine, radiologist Dr. David Toms said, adding the new ultrasound will include three-dimensional imaging. This should reduce waiting lists and give us flexibility with staffing. Wed like to see a 20 per cent increase in efficiency.

The $2.49-million campaign has already led to the opening of the third operating theatre at the Cumberland Regional Health Care Centre and purchased an echocardiogram for internal medicine as well as digital upgrades to X-ray equipment. At present, the campaign is at 90 per cent of its goal with only $253,000 remaining.

Wait times for ultrasounds at the regional hospital are among the worst in the province at about 120 days. That number has been reduced to around 80 days over the summer, but department head Sandra Rose said those numbers will only increase again without the second machine.
