NANAIMO, B.C. David Duizer is showing his heroic side.

During a summer training program as part of his military training for the Royal Military College, he and a fellow cadet were instrumental in rescuing two people from drowning and the possible homicide of one of those victims.

Duizer and NCdt Megan MacDonald assisted the RCMP in rescuing two people from the cold waters of the Pacific Northwest July 27.

Duizer said he and MacDonald were among RMC students taking part in the sea phase at the end of the course to learn the basics of sea life by travelling around Vancouver Island and the Gulf Islands of B.C.

Early that day, Duizer was on duty aboard the training vessel Orca docked in Nanaimo. What he became involved in was more than he bargained for when he climbed from his bunk for duty.

The two individuals were found by the use of a thermal imaging camera, normally used for firefighting.

MacDonald found a middle-aged female, without a lifejacket, clinging to the side of another craft that had come to her rescue, yet she was unable to climb into the boat. The zodiac, maneuvered by Duizer, pulled up alongside her and easily took her aboard. The womans companion, a 50-year-old male, was found floating 10 metres away wearing two lifejackets.

The woman couldnt be moved and the man refused to be moved, Duizer said.

The two boats were tied together and we went back to the jetty under the Search and Rescue boats power, he added

Police and paramedics were waiting on the dock upon their arrival.

The woman began to speak freely and yell of how he had flipped the boat, refused her a lifejacket, and alleged that he attempted to drown her.
