SPRINGHILL - The Cumberland County Riders are $23,000 closer to establishing a multi-use trail park in Fenwick.

The ATV riders group was one of three Cumberland County off-highway vehicle organizations to benefit from $580,947 in funding approved from the provincial Off-highway Infrastructure Fund. The Chignecto and Area ATV Club Society will receive $3,697 to maintain and resurface four water crossings in the county, and the Chignecto Glooscap Snowmobile Association will receive $3,500 to re-deck existing water crossings in the areas of River Hebert, Southampton, Parrsboro and Advocate.

"It's good news for the area, good news for ATV riders and off-highway vehicle users in general," said Charlie Atkinson, a local dealer who sits on the ministerial advisory committee. Made up of stakeholders such as riders, landowners, environmental awareness groups and the health community, the committee refers recommended projects for funding.

In development for the past two years, the Fenwick Riding Park will be the largest off-road riding park in Atlantic Canada. The Cumberland County Riders jumped on the bandwagon of the infrastructure fund right away and did everything they needed to do to secure the funding, according to Atkinson.

"They've done a real bang-up job, taking the bull by the horns to do this," he said. "It's a major project. It's crown land they're using, but to go in and clear that all out and make it into a drivable park for training and riding purposes… that's quite a project for a group of volunteers to take on."

Each year when off-highway vehicle owners register their vehicles, they contribute $40 to the infrastructure fund. It is through these contributions that a 365-km network of new or upgraded snowmobile, all-terrain and multi-use trails will be made available across Nova Scotia
