Young learners return to Cumberland classrooms

BROOKDALE - Summer came to an end for hundreds of students across Cumberland County yesterday, as schools opened for their first day of classes.

Cumberland North Academy was a bustle of activity and nowhere more so than the Grade Primary classroom, where students learned from Mrs. Weatherbee the basics of school behaviour, such as always raising your hand before asking a question.

The wide-eyed students listened as intently as they could while taking in their new surroundings, and seemed to enjoy sitting down for story time with their teacher.

"The biggest thing is making sure we get the notices from the parents about which bus the kids go on," explained Weatherbee. "The kids don't know what bus they go on, so we need to make sure they get on the right one."

The elementary school in Brookdale welcomed 300 students yesterday, up slightly from last year's enrolment.

Although it was a hectic day for principal Cathy MacLean, she said she was enjoying it.

"The first day is always fun," she said. "The kids are excited, the parents are excited, and everyone has their new school clothes on and their new books. They're excited to be here."

Along with finding the right buses, other common challenges facing students on the first day of school are finding the right classrooms and dealing with the disappointment of not being in the same class as particular friends.

Sometimes students are also reluctant to be separated from their parents, but no such situations popped up yesterday, according to MacLean.

"Today was great, there were no tears," she said. "We didn't even have any parents crying."
