Herring fishing season opened Sunday night with more than 100 fishermen on the water searching for a giant school of silvery fish.

Fisherman Ronnie Heighton said buyers are ready to receive their catches but the fish have been eluding them so far.

It may be late next week before there is any amount of fish.

The migrating fish pass through the Northumberland Strait this time of year, and form into giant schools, sometimes spanning nearly two kilometers in length and a half a kilometre wide.
