AMHERST  The front of the Amherst Stadium is getting a long-needed facelift after the town approved a $1.6-million tender to proceed with the third phase of the stadium renovations.

Flagship Constructions bid was selected over two others with construction expected to begin within the next week or so and be completed sometime in December.

This is a sound investment in the health of our community. The stadium has been the anchor of our recreational activities for nearly 50 years and with this commitment it will continue to service the needs of the community for many more years to come, Mayor Jerry Hallee said following a special council meeting on Thursday.

The contract awarded includes upgrading customer service areas at the front of the stadium including a new entryway, canteen as well as stadiumand program offices. The project also includes the installation of a walking track around the top of the seating area.

The heated area, used by seniors, is being moved to the second floor while there will also be meeting rooms, a media room, music room and canteen on the second floor.

Plans to renovate the third floor of the stadium were put on the shelf because of cost. Flagships bid to renovate the presently unused third floor was $165,000.

This is going to provide a facility that will be to the satisfaction of the residents of this community. Once completed it will provide a facility that everyone can be proud of, Coun. Ed Chitty said. Its a project thats long overdue.

The project is being helped by a $1.2-million grant announced earlier this year by the province. The total project cost, including all three phases is $4 million. The town is funding $750,000 through reserves with the balance being funded through long-term debt over 20 years.

The first phase, completed last year, saw the construction of new dressing rooms and washrooms as well as new heating, ventilation and air conditioning systems. The second phase, nearing completion, includes a new concrete slab for the ice surface, boards, glass, mechanical equipment and a roof.
