TRENTON - Trenton Police say that a man who was struck and killed by a train Friday night had been walking along the Trenton Spur railway tracks and laid down on them.

Police are not releasing the name at the family's request, but he has been identified as a 44-year-old Trenton resident. Sgt. Walter Smith says the man did not respond to the oncoming train, which was delivering coal to the Nova Scotia Power Plant in Trenton. Smith says the train made an emergency stop once the conductor noticed someone lying on the track, but it wasn't able to stop in time. The man was struck approximately 100 yards north of the town office, on a section of tracks near Nova Forge, shortly before 11 p.m.

The man suffered severe body trauma and was taken to the Aberdeen Hospital. He was later transferred to the Queen Elizabeth Two Health Science Centre where he died. Police are still investigating why the man was on the track, and are awaiting toxicology results.

Smith says the train contained 25 cars, which each held approximately 130 tonnes of coal, as well as two engines which each weighed approximately 200 tonnes. He says the train was traveling at around 10 miles per hour.

Jim Ryan, assistant general manager of the Cape Breton and Central Nova Scotia Railway, says the time it takes for a train to make an emergency stop can vary. He says it depends on several factors, such as the train's weight and whether it's ascending or descending.

Police say the train was leased by Nova Scotia Power from Sydney Coal, and is operated by Cape Breton and Central Nova Scotia Railway. The track is owned and maintained by the CBNS Railway.
