Fire-ravaged Bridge Workshop gets facelift

AMHERST - Officials and clients with the CACL Adult Bridge Workshop are continuing to put their lives back together following a devastating fire last fall that destroyed their Croft Street facility.

While a new building is still months away, efforts are continuing to restore a sense of normalcy at the facility that works with mentally-challenged individuals.

The group got a major boost recently when a couple of individuals came forward to fix the burned building's exterior.

"It's a bit of closure for us because we don't have to stare at the charred remains every day," executive director Susan Thibodeau said. "We knew it was only going to be a matter of time before the town came along and told us to do something about it, and it's something we could not afford to do on our own."

Roy and Donald MacLean donated the labour and materials to cover up the damaged portion of the building while they were joined by Wayne Melanson and Rob Roy in doing the work.

As well, Elmore Gilroy donated his time to renovate a vacant building across Albion Street from the workshop for occupancy by its clients.

"We've been overwhelmed with how the community has responded. We haven't really begun a fundraising campaign yet and people are making donations and people are coming forward all the time asking what they can do to help," Thibodeau said.

The executive director said the past six months have been difficult ones for centre clients. While the Croft Street laundry is back up and running in the development wing of the old building, a number of other activities, including the button shop, the farmers market and the used clothing shop, have been put on hold until a new building is completed.
