Gisli Sigtryggsson and his wife, Dr. Janneke Gradstein, do not consider themselves environmentalists.

They use cloth diapers on their children, dry all of their clothing on a clothesline instead of a drier, and they just bought a hybrid car. She also drives the three km to work on a bicycle, but considers that more of an exercise choice than an environmental one.

I dont think were really that different, said Gradstein. I think everybody tries to make some good choices, and some people make more than others do.

For example, the young family eats meat, but tries to have some vegetarian meals every week to make less of a footprint on the environment.

They try to buy food thats seasonal and from local farmers and, when at the grocery store, they always look for food thats grown in Canada rather than foreign countries like Mexico. Not because there is anything wrong with products from Mexico, but because of the fuel burned to ship them here.

Oh, and they use the twirly light bulbs too.

I dont think were going to make a huge difference, said Gradstein. I just figure every decision we make has a little impact on the environment and might also impact the people around us. If good choices become normal choices

Sigtryggsson said he picks up a lot of environmentally friendly ideas from the CBC, such as how to make a home more fuel-efficient.

The big part of this for me is that were part of the bio community, he said. A very strong theme in the bio community is to think globally and act locally. Think about what you do locally and how it affects the environment on a global scale.
