When Sean Cheverie and partner, Bart Butler, built Pharmasave six years ago they knew they were taking a bit of a chance.

After all, instead of building in the downtown business core or along busy South Albion Street, they elected to build on the corner of Robert Angus Drive and Church Street in an area that had yet to see much business development.

It's a move that has paid off as work has begun on a $1.5-million expansion that will double the size of the pharmacy and Amherst Family Health Clinic to 30,000 square feet.

"We're very excited about this because it will allow us to do so much more with our business," Cheverie said.

The same it true for the family medical clinic run by Dr. Murray McCrossin and his wife, Elizabeth Smith-McCrossin.

Along with providing space for doctors' offices, they established Amherst's first walk-in after hours health clinic that they hoped would give people a place to go when most doctors' offices are closed. At the same time, they also hoped to take some of the pressure of the emergency department at the Cumberland Regional Health Care Centre.

Since first opening the centre, more than 25,000 people have used the after hours clinic and while response was at first slow, Smith-McCrossin said the number of people using the clinic has been growing by leaps and bounds on an annual basis.

The Pharmasave expansion is just the latest development project in the town. Work is underway on a new Hyundai dealership on South Albion Street and a self-storage facility in the industrial park.
