Snowbird honoured with stamp

SPRINGHILL - Now you can plaster Anne Murray's face on your outgoing mail.

Murray was one of four musicians that were recently honoured in the Canada Post Canadian Recording Artists stamp series. A giant form of Murray's stamp was unveiled at the Anne Murray Centre on Friday night.

Dozens of Murray's fans and family gathered at the Centre to celebrate the stamp's release.

Canada Post's Atlantic Region Communications Manager Genevieve Latour said Canada Post chose Murray to be in the stamp series because she paved the way for Canadian musicians to break into the American market.

"Anne Murray was a leader who opened the way for new musicians. She led the path for Canadian musicians. She made it easier for other artists," Latour said. "She's an icon around the world.

"She's had a fabulous career. She represents the culture of being Canadian."

The stamps were released for purchase on June 29, 2007, and will be available until June 28, 2008. Gordon Lightfoot, Joni Mitchell, and Paul Anka were the other musicians honoured in the series.

Also on Friday night, the Anne Murray Centre officially unveiled "Anne's Wall of Honour," the centre's new donor recognition program. Anyone who donates $500 or more to the centre has their name engraved on the wall.

Murray did not attend Friday's festivities. She was in Toronto recording a duets album.
