New map welcomes all to streets

For a long time Parrsboro has been known as a town with character, but now visitors can see it for themselves.

That is because the latest project from two of the towns graphic designers has put the town on the map. Its own map, in fact.

Its a caricature of the town, described Donna Sheehy. We wanted to make something fun.

The pair has come up a map of Parrsboro that features its many attractions and popular destinations.

Spots like the school, the health care centre and the police station figure prominently with the aid of cute, cartoonish graphics, as does the towns many churches, participating businesses and other spots.

The maps are now being distributed in a fold-out brochure to visitor information centres across Nova Scotia and New Brunswick, as well as locations throughout town, free of charge.

But people are already making use of it, according to Ian Black.

One of the interesting things we found, when we were going around talking to people about this, was a fellow who was trying to find a particular spot here but was having trouble with this great big map he had, said Black.

We gave him one of our packages, and he was no time getting to where he wanted to go.

The project had been in Sheehys mind for quite some time, but did not get rolling until she and Black put their heads together, she explained.

I had thought about it for awhile, but it was so much work that I knew I couldnt do it by myself, she said.

After her and Black met and discussed the idea, it came to life. Both had overlapping talents, but both also had particular skills necessary to make it work. The result is a lively map that not only jumps off the page, but off its own interactive website at www.welcome2ourstreets.com as well.

The map also features such information as GPS co-ordinates of many of the sites, making it even easier for high-tech visitors to find their destinations, and also capitalizing on the popularity of activities such as geo-caching.

This is a fun town and a lot of people dont even realize it, said Sheehy. The map encourages people to travel the whole community and not just go up and down Main Street and back out again. We really want to promote the area, and see businesses start doing well and continue to do well.

The map has received an enthusiastic response from the local business community, much to the pleasure of the artists. Advertising space around the map was snapped up quickly, and inquiries continue to come in.

The map, which will continue to be developed and changed for future years, was expected to be distributed to visitor information centres this week.
