AMHERST - The Cumberland Regional Health Care Centre will soon be down one doctor.

Dr. Marquis Okon, an obstetrician and gynecologist, will be leaving Amherst in mid-August for "family reasons," according Cumberland Health Authority spokesperson Ann Keddy.

"He was the first obstetrician we'd had here in close to 10 years. It was wonderful to bring that sort of service back into the community," said Keddy. "He's been an integral part of the staff and we're really sorry to see him go."

The Nappan hospital has one other obstetrician currently, and the CHA fully intends to hire a replacement to Okon. The departing doctor is actually helping with the hunt for his successor.

However, nobody's been found yet and there's no definite timeframe.

"I know there's potential candidates out there, but we just need to find the right person. It's a process," Keddy said. "We are searching and we'll get someone as soon as possible."

In the meantime, patients in need of an obstetrician or gynecologist will either be referred to the other doctor or to another hospital.
