New cases of the mumps have generally slowed down across the province, but incidents are still turning up.

According to Cumberland Health Authority infections prevention and control specialist Barbara Caulfield, Cumberland County has followed that trend.

"I think what we're seeing is there's still a low level of incidents occurring provincially and we're matching that locally," she said.

Caulfield said that there have been seven suspected cases of the mumps in Cumberland County, with 15-18 cases still occurring provincially each week.

"It's certainly not in an upward trend, but it's still evident out there," she said.

The Department of Health releases figures each week on the status of mumps. CHA spokesperson Ann Keddy said numbers have been the same for the last few weeks, but there's at least one suspected case that's been found this week since the latest figures were released last Friday.

Caulfield said the next step in getting rid of the disease is for the Department of Health to decide where to go next with immunization. She said it's likely the department will look for a way to immunize the 17 to 30 age group, where 70 per cent of the occurrences have been found. Not all health-care workers have been vaccinated as of yet.

"We don't have the capability to see everybody all at once. I think (vaccination) is something we're going to see happen in stages," Caulfield said.

In the meantime, to help prevent catching or spreading mumps, it's suggested that you don't share drinking glasses, wash hands frequently, cover your mouth when you cough, and stay away from others if you're feeling unwell.
