Welcome to Girl Town

PARRSBORO Like any other 13-year-old, Kimberly MacMillan likes to hang out with her friends, but this summer shes turning it into a business opportunity.

And no boys allowed.

The idea is mostly about having a place for girls from nine to 15 come and hang out and play games with friends, do their nails and a whole bunch of girl things, said Kimberly MacMillan, owner and operator of the new seasonal business.

For $5 per day, girls can come in from 10 a.m. until 6 p.m. and spend the day taking part in activities such as karaoke, dancing, games and reading at Girl Town, which held its official opening on Thursday July 5.

Girl Town is located in the former Deli building on Main Street, and is arriving at just the right time with school over, according to the young entrepreneur.

A lot of things in Parrsboro are closing down now, like Kiss the Sky, and Im sad about that, said the daughter of Julie and Kevin MacMillan. Theres a whole bunch of teenagers on the street and since its summer, parents dont want to have a whole bunch of kids at their house. So my mom and I thought of having a little place for girls to come and hang out.

Ms. MacMillan said she was impressed with the initiative taken by her daughter and the hard work she has already put into the business. A whole week was spent painting and cleaning up the building, which was brought up to code with help from her father.

She also thinks it will look great on her resume.

Im really proud of her, she said. Its giving her great skills in terms of leadership and management at her age. Being 13 years old and having your own business is pretty amazing.

The first couple days of business were already drawing steady clientele, including Jade Atkinson, who said she was enjoying activities such as watching movies.

There are lots of games here and its really fun, she said.
