AMHERST - She was always there.

Those four words best sum up Donna Gouchie, according to her friends and family. She passed away on May 31.

"She was always there for her kids, but she was also kind of like a surrogate mom for all our friends," recalled daughter Michelle Landry. "If you needed anything and called, she would do anything she could to help you."

An animal lover all her life, Donna was a dog breeder for many years. Judy Davidson first met her when she bought a Siberian husky in 1987. They were friends from then on, spending time together and even working together when Donna and her husband Kenny operated the popular Redwood Takeout.

Whether she was looking for advice on parenting, dog breeding or anything else, Judy knew she could always turn to her friend.

"She was never afraid to tell you anything," she recalled. "If she ever had anything to say to you, she said it right to your face. There were no back doors with Donna. She just told you straight out."

Judy recalled one incident when she was involved with dog breeding herself, and someone tried to take advantage of her. When Donna got wind of it, she not only came to her friend's aid, but also drove her to the person's house and demanded the money owed.

"She never even knocked on the door, she just walked in and up the steps and took the whole thing in her own hands," she said. "She was just a great person like that."

When Michelle was growing up the family would often travel to dog shows together on the weekends. On the following Mondays her mother would allow her to stay home from school to rest after the hectic weekend. The talks they would have on those Mondays together are among her favourite memories of her mother.

Donna was very strong-minded in a lot of ways, according to Michelle, who said her mother battled serious illness when she was born, and again prior to her death.

"She came into the world fighting, and she went out fighting as well," she said.
