AMHERST  Getting suds on a Sunday just got easier.

The Nova Scotia Liquor Corporation has announced that agency stores, such as Craigs Grocery in Amherst Shore, are now permitted to sell alcohol on Sundays while NSLC stores, including the Superstore liquor store, will be open beginning July 8.

Its great news for us. Weve been waiting for this since we opened the agency store in May, Marilyn Everill of Craigs Grocery said Friday. We have lots of people coming into the store asking us when we are going to be selling (liquor) on Sunday. It should stop people from going to Port Elgin.

Perkins said allowing Sunday sales should stop the flow of customers heading to purchase beer, wine and spirits across the border in New Brunswick. That was one of the key reasons behind opening the Amherst store and allowing the agency stores to sell liquor on Sundays.

We know its going to be huge for Amherst because weve heard from everyone, including Ernie Fage when he was our minister and other merchants, that not being open on Sunday has been driving customers across the border to New Brunswick, Perkins said. Its going to be a big improvement for that store and the agency stores as well because there are quite a few agency stores on the north shore that have suffered the same fate.

Perkins said the NSLC is opening stores based on a business analysis that has looked at each store's ability to add incremental sales while balancing regional needs. The list may be adjusted seasonally as necessary.

Staff will be scheduled according to terms of the collective agreement, and no staff will be required to work Sundays if they do not wish to do so.

The incremental profit generated by Sunday openings will be transferred to the government for expenditures in areas such as health care, education and roads.

Nova Scotia is the last province to allow alcohol to be sold in stores on Sundays. Prince Edward Island just started allowing liquor sales in May.
