The safe grad committee at River Hebert District High School has been raising money all year, and plans to conclude its campaign with a bang Thursday night.

The school will host RockFest, a concert featuring popular Cumberland County bands Big Deal, The Altered Poets and Private Stock.

"It's our last major fund-raiser so we're hoping to raise the rest of the money we need for our year-end trip," explained student Kris Mollon. "There was a similar event here earlier in the year and I figured I would take the idea and run with it."

Kris learned about Southampton rock band Big Deal after coming across a fan-based internet discussion group about them on Facebook. Through that site he contacted band member Adam Siddall, who agreed to headline the show.

Having just released their debut CD, the band jumped at the chance to reach a new audience and support a worthy cause at the same time, according to Siddall.

"We're trying to steer more away from the bar scene, and see if we can do more stuff with younger kids," he said. "We'd like to do more concerts instead of the barroom dance stuff."

The Altered Poets are a four-piece rock group out of Amherst who are also working on their debut album. They played at a recent talent show in River Hebert to a popular response, according to Kris.

"They said they would love to come back and play if we needed them," he said.

With the addition of bluegrass band Private Stock to the lineup, the show is sure to offer a good variety for music lovers, he said.

The show will take place in the school gymnasium from 7-10 p.m.

Following the graduation ceremony on June 28, the River Hebert safe grads will travel to Moncton, N.B. for a night of paint balling, go-karting and a Survivor challenge.
