NSCC helps single mom find her place

Natalie LeBlanc was a single mother with a two-year-old, and didn't know what she was going to do with her life when her friend invited her to attend community college.

"By that time it was August," she recalled. "I knew I had to do something, so I enrolled and I went."

Knowing she wanted a business-related course, she enrolled in the business administration course, but found it "too business." She switched to the office administrative assistant program and knew right away that's where she wanted to be. That was 10 years ago.

LeBlanc admits it was not easy to juggle her workload at school, parenting a small child and working a part-time job at A Buck or Two, but said she is glad she made the decision she did.

She graduated with honours from the one-year program and only one month later the Town of Amherst hired her as a secretary. There she remains happily employed as executive assistant to the operations services department.

She credits much of her success to her experience at the community college.

"The instructors there were committed to supporting student success, and had a genuine interest in helping every student succeed," said LeBlanc, who is proud to be working for her hometown. "It provided for amazing opportunities."

She continues to participate in campus activities as one of the school's many success stories. She speaks every year at the community college's employer expo and maintains a relationship with instructor Peggy Carter, who often calls upon her to help with mock job interviews for students. LeBlanc does not consider it much to ask.

"It's just a way to give back to both the community and the college for everything they've done for me," she said.
