Mental Health and Addictions Services relocates offices, expands programs

Addiction Services has moved to better serve the community.

They are now located at 30 Prince Arthur St., next to the newly expanded Mental Health Services site.

Since the move downtown, clinical manager Irene Gunn said they've increased access for those seeking support, especially for those within walking distance of the offices.

The most important upgrade in the move is the group room, where clients go for support in a group format. Addiction Services has also greatly increased its support to individuals trying to quit smoking.

Addiction Services' old locations, at 18 South Albion Street and at the All Saints Springhill Hospital remain in use. The old site in Amherst is being used by Public Health Services while the Springhill site will continue to provide care for clients in that area.

"We now have the staff from our two previous community-based offices residing together and all our administrative materials in one location in downtown Amherst," Gunn said in an e-mail. "We have also maintained individual appointments and groups for people in Springhill, so service there has not been diminished with our move."

The move enables Addiction Services to accommodate the need for their help in this area, especially for those suffering from alcohol, marijuana, and/or nicotine addiction.

"Housing all our staff together has improved client service since we are now able to review new intake requests for service more frequently, staff can consult easier and work together on developing new programs more easily," Gunn said.

Addiction Services and Mental Health Services are hosting an open house today from 3 p.m. to 5:30 p.m. All are encouraged to attend.

The closing of the former Springhill Outpatient office for addiction services comes with the loss to the community of three full time positions. One secretary & a therapist have moved to Amherst while the Community Health Worker position one of 2 formerly in the county will likely not be filled. Without a Community Health Worker supplying a link with the recovering community and travelling the county an important service no longer exists. Springhills' walk in clients & timely support for inpatient followup along with groups that used to be a daily event in Springhill are no longer . I quote Irene Gunn who said this move will be most useful to those clients within walking distance of the new office in Amherst.
