PARRSBORO The first Walk for Cystic fibrosis (CF) will be held in Parrsboro on May 27, but the disease is nothing new to this area.

Craig Dowe of Diligent River passed away in 2002 after a lifelong battle with CF, and his sister Darcy Sterling continues to fight the disease. Their many friends and family are putting together the walk to raise awareness and funds to help find a cure.

Were doing it for Craig, and well all have t-shirts with his picture on it, said Amy McGraw, who is coordinating the walk. But were also doing it for Darcy.

Cystic fibrosis is a hereditary disease that affects the entire body, causing progressive disability and early death. Difficulty breathing and insufficient enzyme production in the pancreas are the most common symptoms.

Cystic fibrosis is one of the most common life-shortening, childhood-onset inherited diseases.

The volunteers involved in the local walk are now collecting pledges for the event, and are hopeful to receive support not only in the form of pledges, but also from those who want to come out that day at the Parrsboro bandstand, where a barbecue and refreshments will be available.

Anyone who wants to collect pledges and come walk with us can, or if they just want to support one of us, they can do so by calling myself or Darcy, said McGraw. If you dont want to walk and collect pledges, just drop by and make a donation and/or buy a hot dog or something.

T-shirts, balloons and kids activities will also be available, with all events taking place at the bandstand.

Registration for the walk starts at noon, with the walk beginning at 1 p.m. A reception will follow afterwards. The route for the walk has yet to be determined, but will involve a short walk around town, according to McGraw.

For more information, contact Amy McGraw at 254-3413 or Darcy Sterling at 254-2085.
