Fashion show to raise funds for youth trip

A group of kids here wish to go on a whale watching trip to Miramichi, N.B. this summer, and are hoping a Frenchys Fashion Show on April 24 will help.

The event will be a fund-raiser for 10 youths in care with the local Family and Children Services branch, who hope to raise $3,000 for the cause.

The reason we decided to put this group together is to show kids how hard money is to come by, explained caseworker Holly Martin. A lot of these kids are older kids and were trying to show them that money doesnt grow on trees. Hard work, especially teamwork, will be a good learning experience for them.

Trips such as this are not something that Family and Children Services (FCS) can provide to the youth in care, so the kids have taken on the initiative themselves to raise enough money for the attractions, accommodations, meals, etc., according to Martin. Three FCS staff members have agreed to serve as chaperones.

The fashion show will take place Tuesday evening at 6:30 p.m. at the Knights of Columbus hall on Robie Street. About 100 outfits will be modeled by the youths themselves, along with community volunteers.

Tickets for the show are available at the FCS front desk and at Guys Frenchys.

But none of this would happen without the work of the youth themselves, according to social worker Cathy Burke-Crowe.

This is something they identified and expressed interest in, and they realized they had to work hard to raise the finances and take responsibility for doing it, she said.

Other fundraising activities have included the raffling of Easter baskets, bake sales and the sale of notebooks while the next few months will see car washes as well. The fashion show will also feature a canteen, silent auction and 50/50 draw put on by the youths.
