Replacement on the horizon

Cumberland Health Authority spokesperson Ann Keddy confirmed Thursday that Dr. Aqeel Al-Aqeel is leaving the hospital at the end of May.

He is leaving for family reasons. He really likes it here and loves the hospital, but he wants to be closer to his family and has made the decision to leave, Keddy said.

Al-Aqeel came to Cumberland County in 2004 during a flurry of recruitments that were part of a provincially-sponsored program that enabled the health authority to fill a number of vacancies by offering a guaranteed minimum income. Most specialists are paid on a per patient basis, making it difficult for rural areas to attract specialists.

Dr. Al-Aqeel has been very complimentary of the facility and the people he has worked with since arriving, Keddy said.

Prior to coming to Amherst, Dr. Al-Aqeel worked at the University of Ottawa and McMaster University in Hamilton, Ont.

His departure will reduce the number of general surgeons to two full-time equivalents, which includes two surgeons working on a half-time basis. Keddy does not believe the shortage will impact patient care since the authority is nearing an agreement with another surgeon to take his place.

Were very close to bringing in another general surgeon as part of our recruitment efforts, Keddy said.
