PORT GREVILLE – Places like Port Greville usually see many of their residents leave their small town, their lives leading them elsewhere.

So that’s why the FPW Field Day is so important, said Marge Crossman, who came out to watch the opening parade today.

“People come home from all over, wherever they are, to see the parade,” she said.

“That’s what fireman’s field day is all about, bringing everyone together,” said Blain Varner, who brought his 4-year-old grandson Grayson Varner to see the parade too.

“My favorite part was getting the candy,” Grayson said.

The parade moved through town and ended at the fire hall, where festival grounds were set up with a stage for live music, a marketplace of antiques and fresh produce, and a bouncy castle.

Pat Stevenson was one of the vendors who brought in some of his collection to sell, mainly old dolls and statuettes.

“There’s only oh no many collections you can stuff into a house, so I’m here to get rid of some. I’m not from here personally but my family is, and I think it’s a great day to meet new people.”
