UPPER NAPPAN – Voters in the Cumberland County’s District 6 in 2008 will have familiar choices when they had back to the polls this weekend.

Bill Baker will once again challenge incumbent Kathy Redmond for the seat, and is hoping for better results this time around.

“I help people all the time anyway,” said the Greenville resident. “I help people get pensions, medical help, whatever. I get phone calls all the time anyway, so I decided to run.”

For some reason, area residents have often turned to Baker for assistance in the past, and he said he always gets back to people with an answer from their MLA, their MP, or whomever they need to reach.

This time around, he said the issues on everyone’s minds seem to include roads, health care, schools and pensions.

“I’ve knocked on every door,” said Baker, who added that he has received a positive response from those he has visited. “It all sounds good, but you never know until you count the ballots.”

Redmond said she has worked hard to represent the district over the past 12 years. Even though she now lives in Pugwash, she said she has received a lot of positive feedback from the public and is not concerned that living outside the district will affect her chances at re-election.

“The people in the district are so supportive and they’re saying they will still support me because they tell me that I’ve always done a good job representing them,” she said.

Since she was first elected in 2000, Redmond has worked to support the district’s community centres and many groups in the area. She was instrumental in getting the playground installed at the Wentworth Consolidated Elementary School in 1997-98 and she worked to get the playground equipment updated in 2007-08.

She has served on numerous committees, and said she would continue to lobby for such things as the Wentworth school and improved roads.

“I love doing my job on council and serving the people of District 6,” said Redmond. “We have accomplished a lot in 12 years and I would like to continue to represent the people of the district for another four years.”
