TRURO – Next week’s provincial election debate in Stewiacke has been cancelled.
After a week of negotiation, the parties have been unable to agree to a format for the debate involving candidates in the riding of Colchester-Musquodoboit Valley.
Gary Burrill, the NDP canadidate for the riding, contacted the Truro Daily News to voice his disappointment over the debate being cancelled.
“I very much regret the cancellation,” Burrill said. “I’m quite anxious for a debate with my opponents and I agree to do that in any form, on any date, at any time and anywhere.”
Burrill said the cancellation doesn’t enhance the democratic process and was very happy to see the chamber plan to host the Colchester-Musquodoboit Valley debate within the riding, whereas in the past they were held in Truro.
The other two debates will still be held Sept. 24, albeit at a new location, the Truro Fire Hall. They were originally scheduled to be held at the Marigold Cultural Centre.
Those debates will see candidates from the riding of Colchester North face off from 6:30 p.m. until 7:30 p.m. From 8 p.m. until 9 p.m., the candidates for the riding of Truro-Bible Hill-Millbrook-Salmon River will debate the issues.
The debates will also be broadcast on local specialty station, HOPE-FM, at 106.3 on the FM Dial, beginning with the Colchester North Debate at 6:30 p.m.
Questions for the debates can be sent to firstname.lastname@example.org until noon on Sept. 23.
