Running in District 5

Kathy Langille is running in Cumberland Municipal District 5.

WALLACE – Former Cumberland municipal councillor Kathy Langille has announced she will be running in District 5, soon to be vacated by retiring councillor Ron MacNutt.

“I have been asked by some of the residents of the district to run and after careful consideration I have decided to do just that,” said Langille, who served as the District 4 representative from 1994 to 2000 and from 2004 to 2008.  “I grew up in Wallace Bay and have spent lots of time in the district so I am very familiar with the issues and needs that they have faced over the years.

“The 15 years experience I had on council has given me a thorough understanding and advantage in serving the residents over the next four yars.”

As the District 4 councillor, Langille said she was successful in getting Pugwash’s streets repaved and obtained funding for the paving of the library parking lot. She was also active in waterfront development, obtaining the tourist bureau from the border and bringing the Bluenose II and HMCS Kingston to Pugwash.

She also worked to maintain both the North Cumberland Memorial Hospital and Cyrus Eaton Elementary and worked on application for the National Historic Site designation for Thinker’s Lodge.

She also raised concerns to the Department of Fisheries about raising the size of lobsters fishermen could catch in Pugwash, Wallace and Malagash.

“Some of the issues I would like to see addressed in District 5 include the wharf in Malagash, Blue Sea Park, roads and the Malagash Miners Musuem,” she said. “In Wallace, projects would include a new fire hall, supporting the Wallace and Area Development Association’s waterfront development project, the recreation park and the Wallace Elementary School.”

She said economic development and tourism are very important to the community. She said the area already has a lot going for it with the miners museum, Blue Sea Park, Jost Vineyards, the Wallace and Area Museum, the Wallace Bay Wildlife Trail and Fox Harb’r.
