SPRINGHILL – Another name has been added to the list of hopefuls to unseat Springhill Mayor Allen Dill.

David Wyatt, a former Halifax business-owner and resident of Springhill, announced his candidacy in a letter to The Citizen-Record, saying, if elected, he will turn down the annual mayoral honorarium of $11,000.

“I also will not accept any form of pension from the Town of Springhill as your mayor,” Wyatt wrote.

This marks Wyatt’s second bid to become mayor. In the 2008 municipal election Wyatt trailed behind Frank Likely, who lost the election to Dill. Dill confirmed this summer he will reoffer as mayor and Max Snow announced his candidacy in March.

Nomination day for candidates is Sept. 11. Constituents will elect their next municipal government October 20.

In his words

Dear editor,

A serious challenge for all mayor/councilor hopefuls in Springhill: Promise as I so do that if elected to office in October you will not accept in any manner or any form any salary or stipend whatsoever.

I also will not accept any form of pension from the Town of Springhill as your mayor.

I am a former businessman that at the end of my career owned a 9000 sq. ft. store in a shopping center in HRM, many other smaller stores, apartment buildings, land holdings etc. Also various political and government appointments--for example, in one position (lasting over five years) I had a secretary and a personal assistant because of the size and scope of the operation (1500 personnel.)   And this is the last I'll say publicly about my private life:  I am in the 99th percentile for intelligence (IQ/Mensa) amongst the world's population. (You will be electing a person to the mayor’s chair with extensive government and business experience.)

Summing up, let's just say that I'm financially secure--enough that I will not be taking your cash out of your pockets and putting it into mine. For myself, I am grateful to be a citizen of Springhill with its peaceful environment, graceful people and safe streets--and I intend to keep it that way.

When you vote in people who are not doing it for the money,  you will finally be voting in people who are doing it for you, the people.

Thank you for reading,

David Wyatt

Dear Mr. Wyatt, I do not live directly in Springhill but I must say that after reading this article I would not vote for you in such a municipal election even if I was a resident. First off, as a member of MENSA I would assume you have known from a young age the simplest rules of capitalization. Second of all, if you knew anything about Springhill's municipal government you would know that there is no pension allotted to anyone elected as Mayor of Springhill. Thirdly, I am not sure what your unnamed business background has to do with leading an entire town of 3000 plus residents. Congratulations on all of your past accomplishments but they seem highly irrelevant. Good luck in the election, it appears as though you'll need it.
