Registration deadline on March 17 to be eligible to win prizes
The Cypress Health Region has once again partnered with the City of Swift Current to offer the Sixth Annual Get Fit! Be Fit! Youth Wellness Day on March 21. The event promotes physical activity in youth by providing an opportunity to learn new sports and gain knowledge of healthy nutrition.
Physical activity has numerous benefits for our children and youth. Beyond the health benefits, physical activity provides an opportunity to build social skills and friendships, improve body image and self-esteem, learn the importance of working together and that everyone plays an important role on a team, build vocabulary, as well as increase their memory and concentration abilities.
Research shows us that 87% of our children and youth are not meeting Canada’s physical activity guideline of 90 minutes per day. The evidence shows us that there has been a serious decline in the aerobic fitness of our youth and a tremendous increase in childhood obesity. As well, the number of children and youth affected by type 2 diabetes over the last decade is on the rise.
Lots of kids don’t know what sports they like to play or what they may be good at. This event provides our youth with an opportunity to come and explore physical activity. This year’s event will take place on March 21 at the Swift Current Stockade and Palliser buildings from 6 p.m. to 9:30 p.m.
On this day youth ages 9-18 will have the opportunity to partake in various physical activities, some of which they may have never had the opportunity to try before. This year they will also have the chance to participate in a couple of games as part of the circuit.
There are tons of prizes to win, such as an iPad mini, a gym membership, sports equipment, and many others that encourage physical activity. To participate in the event you can register as an individual or in a group (max 10) by March 17. To register, call 306-778-2787, fill out a form at City Wide Registration, or go online and print the registration form at www.city.swift-current.sk.ca under ‘Leisure’ then ‘Programs’. You must pre-register to be eligible to win the iPad Mini. A limited number of drop-ins will be accepted on the night of the event, space permitting.
