The Back Fence with Linda Baker

Ten members were present at the March 3rd meeting of the East Mapleton-Leamington Sewing Circle at the home of Marlene Millard, Mapleton.

President Ruth Foster conducted the business meeting. The devotional, entitled "Leaning on God" was given by Nellie Gilroy. Linda Baker's minutes were read and approved. Treasurer Marlene gave an excellent report. Motions were passed to make a donation to the Mapleton Cemetery Fund in memory of the late Mabelle Brown.  It was also approved that we donate $275 to Camp Ta-Wa-Si, enabling a child to attend camp this summer. Members were reminded the $6 subscription fee for "News We Share" will be due at our April meeting.

The evening's project, Variety Auction, realized $127.50. Mystery draw went to Dorothy Lavers. A time of fellowship was enjoyed as always. Tasty refreshments prepared by hostess Marlene and Dorothy Lavers, assisted with serving by Ruth and Lorna, brought a very pleasant evening to a close.  Lucky prizes went to Dorothy Harrison, Jeanette Thompson, and Dorothy Lavers. Nellie Gilroy will be hostess on April 7. It is the season once again. Maple syrup will soon be produced.

Above freezing day temperatures and below freezing night temperatures bring out maple sugar farmers and toting their supply of buckets, spiles, drills, and tubing to tap the trees and gather the sap. We are lucky to be in a part of the world where climate and conditions allow us to make pure maple syrup. Go witness this special time of the year.

Stroll to the sugar shack where the sap from the tree is boiled, evaporating the water and leaving sweet syrup. The lengthy process goes on for days when conditions are right.

The Sugar Shack is in full production transforming the sap into pure maple syrup in the wood-fired evaporator. Perhaps a visit to a local sugar woods, followed by a delectable pancake supper at the local church or hall would be a highlight for the day.

Don't forget: annual pancake supper at St. Andrews-Wesley United Church, Springhill, is Saturday, March 5, 3 to 6 p.m.

Pancakes, maple syrup, baked beans, sausage, brown bread, cake, tea, coffee. Adults: $8. Children 12 and under $4. Family of 4 - $20.00. Eat in or take out.

On Sat. Mar. 29th there will be an 80th birthday open house celebration for Rev. James Martell in the church basement dining room, St. Andrews Wesley United Church, from 2 to 4 p.m. Everyone welcome.

Last year’s concert by the fantastic Canadian Fiddle Champion Scott Woods was a show far beyond the expectations for the people who attended it at St. Andrew's-Wesley United Church, Springhill. Already many of them have purchased tickets not wanting to miss Scott and his band on April 24th for their Old Time Jubilee salute to Don Messer and His Islanders at St. A-W Church in Springhill. Tickets ($25) will soon be on sale at Pharmasave in Springhill, Amherst, Oxford and Parrsboro as well as O'Briens Pharmacy in Pugwash. Watch for posters. We expect tickets to sell quickly, so don't delay.

Until next time, thank you for traveling with me down my country road.
