The Book Review: Maine ABC-By Susan Ramsay Hoguet. (Camden, Maine: Down East Books). Hard cover, $14.99, 32 pages.
Geared towards helping children between the ages of 2 and 5 learn the alphabet, Maine ABC is more than just another book about letters.
Maine ABC author/illustrator/business owner (Animal Tile Works) and International Children’s Choice Award winner Susan Ramsay Houget, whose books have also won awards from the American Institute of Graphic Arts, New York Public Library, School Library Journal, National Council of Teachers of English, Library of Congress and the American Booksellers Association, finds an instructive way of teaching children their ABCs while helping them learn about the state of Maine.
Realizing that one does not always have to reinvent the wheel while writing, Hoguet used such animal tiles as bear, lobster, newt and rabbit from her Animal Tile Works alphabet line in her new book Maine ABC.
Starting with the letter A (alewives in Damariscotta Mills), Hoguet’s colourful illustrations help make each letter of the alphabet more concrete for children. In addition to alewives, a type of fish, and bears, the author/illustrator creates colourful pictures of chickadees, dories, eagles, fiddleheads, gulls, halibut and islands, notwithstanding Jack-in-the-pulpit, to help her audience visualize each letter of the alphabet.
From there, Katahdin, lobster, moose, newts, osprey, puffins, quahogs, rabbits, seals, trout, urchin, voles, whales, crossing signs (X), yawls and a zillion snowflakes round out the images depicted in Maine ABC.
