Five Islands News with Doug McCarthy
Hello once again from Five Rock.
In a small town such as this, most people are family. Those who are not family by blood, are often family by marriage, and if not by marriage, over many years, become family by default.
With this in mind, over the past week, Five Islands has lost two family members: a good friend, Ben Ripley, and my uncle, Purcell Faulkner. Ben was a good man, who often had a kind word and a smile, even when things were not going well. When I was younger, Uncle Purcell would often play his harmonica, knowing I didn't like it, but that I pretended to. Looking back, I wish I could have told him that I appreciated it more than he knew.
As I am writing this column on Remembrance Day, it only seems fitting that while my family and I attend the service today, along with those who served and died for me, I will remember them as well. Rest in peace, guys. You will be missed.
The UCW of Peniel United Church would like to invite everyone to join them for an evening of entertainment and desserts on Friday, November 22, starting at 7 p.m. For only $6, patrons will be treated to a variety of desserts, served with tea and coffee. On the entertainment side, there will be music, skits, recitations and more. While some of the talent may surprise you, it will come as no surprise that the UCW ladies will serve up some fantastic goodies. Hope to see you there.
Thanks for reading.
