Couple celebrates 50th anniversary

To celebrate their 50th anniversary, Alta and Murray Fife, and daughter Cindy, were supper guests with Alta's sister, Brenda Bowden and husband Wyman, Fox River.

Brenda had prepared a delicious turkey dinner with all the trimmings and a three-tier anniversary cake. The evening brought back old memories, as Alta and Murray were married at the same homestead 50 years ago.

Alta and Murray would like to thank all who called, sent flowers and gifts, and they enjoyed hearing from their son Mike, wife Laura and grandson Nickolis from B.C. by phone. Others to visit on Feb. 4 were son Kenneth, Springhill, and Alta's brother, Hollie Benjamin, Parrsboro.

Memorial donations received for our New Canaan Cemtery fund were from: Sherma Terrio, Sackville, and Verlie McLeod, Amherst, in loving memory of Thora Meldrum; also a donation from Carol and Alan Wilson of Dartmouth in memory of Mary Gilbert. Any donations may be sent to Cemetery Fund in care of Phyllis Wheaton, treasurer. Thank you.

A largely attended funeral service for Mary Gilbert, wife of Cedric Gilbert, New Canaan, took place on Jan. 28 from Smith's Funeral Home in Parrsboro with Rev. Tory Byrne officiating.

Following the opening prayer and comforting words, the hymn "The Old Rugged Cross" was sung. A very touching eulogy was read by son Jeffrey. The recessional hymn was "Whispering Hope."

Family members that came home to spend a few days with Cedric were son Allen and his son, Michael; son Jeffrey and wife Jan, their son Johney and daughter Jennifer Ruddy, all from the Ottawa district; also home was son Brian and daughter Kenda Riles, Lower Sackville, and other surrounding relatives came to the funeral.

The groundhog predicted we are to have an early spring; it can't come too soon to melt these mountains of snow.

Happy Valentine's Day.
