CHARLOTTETOWN Cash-strapped AIDS PEI says its needle exchange program will remain open into the new year on a limited basis, thanks to donations from around the Atlantic region.

Two weeks ago, the organization announced the program would be shutting down in the new year due to a lack of funding.

Mark Hanlon, executive director of AIDS PEI, says theyre still talking to the province about funding but in the meantime, other organizations have stepped forward.

Hanlon says theyve received donations of syringes from other organizations such as the AIDS Committee of Newfoundland and the Mainline Needle Exchange in Halifax.

The Island organization has also had calls from private individuals willing to provide syringes or offering to make a donation.

He says the support has been overwhelming.
