AMHERST? The Cumberland County United Way Campaign has surpassed its goal for the year by $2,000.

The campaign managed to raise $147,000, which will be distributed amongst nine member agencies. Hopefully this will be enough to help them meet their needs, said United Way president Michael Stack.

Were very thankful for the community minded individuals and business that donated this year.

This years campaign got off to a rocky start, at one point there was some concern the target amount might not be reached. But in the end the community pulled through.

There have been more organizations looking for funding in recent years. And some of the pledge kits sent out to business have been slow coming in. So the challenges are ongoing, said Stack.

It spreads the same amount of dollars a little thinner.

This years goal was increased by $5,000 to try to keep up with the demand. There were also several new organizations that applied for funding this year, said Kathy Skinner United Way executive director.

Its a smaller community but people are always giving, she said.

Plans have already started for next years campaign, which will mark 50 years of The United Way in Cumberland County.
