AMHERST - On a blustery Monday evening two little boys sit in front of a wood stove in their grandmother's living room, calmly separating a small pile of assorted groceries they've recently purchased.

The boys are Mitchell and Marshall Hubley. They've purchased the groceries sitting in front of them with their Christmas money, which was $10 each. Their grandmother Pearl Richardson matched their contribution.

The boys plan on donating their treasure of foodstuffs to the Amherst Food Bank as soon as they can.

"I'm hoping this will help them get a taste of helping others," said Richardson.

The boys picked up as much as their budget would allow them, Richardson is also an employee at Wal-mart so her discount helped as well. But the boys did all the shopping on their own, she said.

"Grandma helped by adding in her head," she said.

Originally they had been heading into Wal-mart to buy a toy, but it was only three weeks after Christmas and they really didn't need anything else, she said.

So Richardson suggested maybe they should do something else with their money. It was decided that they would use their money to make a donation to the food bank.

"Most kids today have so much already," she said.

When asked if they bought things they themselves would like, Marshall was quick to pipe up.

"I did, Kraft Diner and tuna," he said.

Richardson gives as much as she can and she's glad her grandsons are also helping out.

"I can't do much to help but I can do some," she said.

"I don't think a lot of people realize but there are a lot of people around that don't have enough to eat," she said.

Both boys enjoyed the experience of shopping for others and hope for a repeat as soon as possible.

"Next time we have some money," said Mitchell.

"I like shopping now," added Marshall.
