AMHERST - The United Way recently kicked off its 2007 fundraising campaign seeking to raise $145,000, up $5,000 from last year's total.

"The efforts of the United Way are far more outreaching than people realize,'' Cathy Skinner, executive director of the United Way, said.

"The programs we support touch the entire community from the very young to the elderly and everyone in between,'' she added.

The campaign runs until Dec. 31 and, as in the past, there are a variety of ways to contribute including payroll deduction or mail-in contributions.

Skinner wants the community to note there will be no door-to-door canvass.

One of the programs that the United Way has undertaken is the River Hebert Reading Program, one that is not listed in the brochure available to everyone.
