UPPER NAPPAN - The Cumberland YMCA should know next month if the Municipality of Cumberland is going to support a $60,000 funding request.

UPPER NAPPAN - The Cumberland YMCA should know next month if the Municipality of Cumberland is going to support a $60,000 funding request.

YMCA interim CEO Divya Minocha and board chair Robert Nixon appeared before council's September session on Wednesday to update it on its restructuring efforts and to request funding to build on the support already ready received from Amherst.

"Sometime ago we requested $60,000 from the county of which $25,000 was received back in June when we needed it most," Nixon said, adding the YMCA would like to receive the remaining $35,000 of that request.

Along with the $100,000 it has already received from the town and its request to the county, the YMCA is seeking $20,000 each from other stakeholders including the Amherst Rotary Club, the Amherst Lions Club and the Y's Menettes.

Nixon said these contributions would bring the YMCA out of its deficit situation and put it a positive cash flow situation. Changes to the budget since earlier this summer have put the YMCA on solid footing, Nixon said, and with additional support and ongoing restructuring through the strategic plan the YMCA should survive for many more years.

Minocha said the support of the town was a huge boost to the cash-strapped organization, but was quick to point out that much more support is needed to ensure the long-term sustainability of the YMCA.

The interim CEO said the YMCA is continuing to work through implementing its strategic plan. Part of that process is holding a second membership meeting on Wednesday, Sept. 26, at 7 p.m. at the YMCA to set up a committee to recruit and co-ordinate volunteers.

The YMCA has been struggling since last December to come to terms with a $200,000 accumulated deficit and capital improvements that can no longer be put off. It's not the first time the YMCA has been in financial trouble. It closed for about 18 months in the mid-1990s becoming at the time the only YMCA in Canada to ever reopen after being closed for financial reasons.
