PARRSBORO  Amalgamating Cumberland Countys municipalities into one or two units would not be a good alternative to Parrsboro residents, according to the towns mayor.

Doug Robinson said he feels an argument can be made for amalgamation on the economic development front, but he doesnt think political amalgamation would work for his town.

I dont get a good feeling in my tummy about amalgamation. I just dont see how it would work or how it would benefit Parrsboro, Robinson said.

Last week, Springhill town council openly discussed amalgamation in Cumberland County when both Mayor Guy Brown and his deputy, Doug Dobson, said it may be the only answer for smaller towns like theirs.

Robinson said he understands the problems being faced in Springhill because they are many of the same pressures his community is facing, but he believes amalgamation would be a tough sell in Parrsboro because its so far removed from Amherst, Springhill and Oxford.

He also feels it would be difficult to set up one government for the entire county since the views of someone on the Northumberland Strait would be a lot different than someones in Parrsboro.

The mayor also feels the services offered to residents of his town would suffer.

In the winter time, residents here know their streets are going to be cleared in a timely fashion, he said. Would the same thing still happen with amalgamation?

The only way amalgamation could work in Cumberland County, he said, is if the province were to pour a lot of money into the area.

And while some have mentioned closer co-operation as an alternative to amalgamation, Robinson doesnt know if that work work unless the municipal units were willing to put actions behind their words.

You can talk about co-operation all you want but co-operation is not about talking, its about doing, he said, adding Parrsboro does have a good relationship with Amherst and regularly uses its planning and engineering services.

He said he also doesnt expect his town council to be discussing the matter anytime soon.
