Some unexpected brands have been getting into unexpected market segments lately, with premium player Mercedes-Benz now hawking the full-size Sprinter cargo and passenger vans from its prestigious upscale showrooms and Ford entering an untapped compact delivery market with its Transit Connect cargo van.

More recently, Nissan unveiled a van of its own and with it a plan to market it to commercial class clients. The forthcoming NV series, which will include NV1500, NV2500 and NV3500 commercial vans in varying roof heights, appears to be targeting the traditional North American full-size van segment now populated by the Chevrolet Express/GMC Savana twins, and Ford E-Series vans.

The NV series vans were expected later this year, but according to a Nissan spokesperson they won't be arriving until Q1 of 2011. This means Nissan will be able to hit the market with a 2012 model year van, more appealing to lease customers concerned with depreciation, while the delay also helps the NV engineering team complete necessary validation.
