A smartphone application for your car? It makes so much sense. In fact, all major manufacturers should develop them for their customers. Happily, Mazda recently has.

The app is officially called the MyMazda Service iPhone App. Mazda North American Operations (MNAO) markets the application as a way for Mazda owners to access service offers for their vehicles, scheduled maintenance reminders, factory maintenance schedules and more. Perhaps best of all is that the MyMazda App is free and is available via the Apple App Store.

In addition to informing users about maintenance schedules, recall information and even vehicle service history results, the new app lets Mazda owners update their contact information, register their vehicles with Mazda and also choose a preferred dealership for the vehicle they register. Additionally, the new app gives Mazda owners custom-tailored service as well as parts offers and promotions.

As popular as the iPhone is, Mazda recognizes the popularity of Android-based smart phones. That's why, in a few months' time, the MyMazda Android App will be available as well.

This isn't the first time the Hiroshima-based automaker has announced a smartphone application. The Mazda Roadside Assistance App, co-developed with Cross Country Automotive Services, was announced last year. Also known as Mazda Assist, the app was designed to provide Mazda drivers with immediate roadside assistance in the event the vehicle runs out of gas, gets a flat tire, or if the driver has been locked out of the car or is in need of a tow truck. Mazda Assist works similarly to GM's OnStar system and connects the user to a roadside assistance agent ready to dispatch help to the vehicle's location through GPS technology. The app even gives drivers an estimated time of arrival for when help will get there.

Both the MyMazda Service iPhone App and the Mazda Roadside Assistance App are available now.
