With the advent of this month's New York International Auto Show, Chevrolet has chosen to show off its tenth-generation Impala full-size sedan. This latest generation Impala has been introduced as a 2014 model and boasts improvements in styling, safety and technology.

In terms of its exterior styling, the new Impala is less curvaceous than before and instead more broad and muscular in its appearance. The 2014 Impala features low-profile projector-beam headlights, or HID headlights and LED daytime running lights on LTZ models. A choice of 18-, 19- or even 20-inch wheels is also available.

"Our design team was challenged to create a new classic, but that didn't mean relying on nostalgia," said John Cafaro, director of North America passenger car exterior design. "This is very much a contemporary car, with design elements, craftsmanship and attention to detail that complement its advanced technology and performance."

A stronger body structure translates to improved ride and handling performance, as well as a quieter environment for occupants inside. The interior features Ultrasuede and perforated leather upholstery as well as a standard 4.2-inch display screen with reconfigurable features. A larger eight-inch touchscreen is also available and comes paired to Chevrolet's MyLink infotainment system. As is the case with other Chevrolets, the 2014 Impala comes available with the subscription-based OnStar customer service program.

No less than three direct-injection powertrains are offered for the 2014 model year. They include a 2.4-litre Ecotec four-cylinder, a 2.5-litre Ecotec four-cylinder and a 3.6-litre V6 engine. The 2.4-litre engine is estimated to deliver 182 horsepower and uses an eAssist system for electric assistance in certain driving conditions, therefore helping to conserve fuel. Peak output from the slightly larger 2.5-litre Ecotec engine is estimated to be 195 horsepower, while the 3.6-litre V6 engine is estimated to produce 303 horsepower. All engines for the 2014 Impala come mated to six-speed automatic transmissions.

With regard to safety, the 2014 Impala features 10 standard airbags and a host of technologies such as adaptive cruise control, collision mitigation braking, a forward collision alert, a side blind zone alert, a rear cross traffic alert and a lane departure warning system.

The 2014 Chevrolet Impala will be assembled in Detroit-Hamtramck, Michigan and Oshawa, Ontario. It will be offered in LS, LT and LTZ versions, and further details regarding pricing and fuel economy will be available closer to the new Impala's market introduction.
