The Los Angeles Auto Show will play host to the 2013 Chevrolet Spark mini car which is already available in Mexico, South America, Europe, Asia and Australia. For the North American market, Chevrolet has equipped the Spark with a new front end, a longer rear fascia, redesigned side mirrors and revised headlights and taillights.

Inside, the Spark features a thoroughly modern interior with a three-spoke steering wheel, a motorcycle-themed gauge cluster and ice blue ambient lighting. Air conditioning and power windows are standard equipment, and the Spark 1LT and 2LT models are available with a seven-inch touch screen radio that displays smart phone-based navigation as well as media contacts for hands-free calling.

Power is supplied by a 1.2-litre 4-cylinder engine which develops 85 horsepower. The engine can be mated to either a 5-speed manual transmission or a 4-speed automatic. Fuel economy figures have not been released yet, but Chevrolet says the Spark will offer "competitive fuel economy."

There are no less than 10 standard airbags in the Spark. They include dual-stage frontal air bags, driver and passenger front knee air bags, side curtain air bags and seat-mounted side air bags. The Spark even comes equipped with a rollover sensor and an OnStar safety and security system that uses GPS and cell phone technology to call for assistance when necessary.

"Spark is for buyers who want much more than a 'cute' small car – they want a car that can be personalized, is dynamic and fashionable, and delivers a lot of value for the money," said Chris Perry, Vice President, Global Chevrolet Marketing and Strategy. "Spark's vibrant exterior and interior colors make a fashion statement, but it is also affordable, safe, maneuverable and very fuel-efficient."

Chevrolet plans to bring the Spark to U.S. and Canadian showrooms by the middle of 2012. The Spark will compete with other mini cars such as the Smart Fortwo, the Scion iQ and the Fiat 500.
