When Chevrolet announced the 2012 Camaro ZL1 earlier this year, it was a shocking revelation. After all, the ZL1 is a Camaro with more horsepower than the new Ferrari 458 Italia or the Mercedes-Benz SLS AMG - in short, it's a pony car that delivers supercar power at a fraction of the price. Now, Chevrolet is keeping the momentum rolling with the announcement of the 2013 Camaro ZL1 Convertible which will go on sale in late 2012.

Billed as Chevrolet's most-powerful convertible ever (sorry Corvette owners), the 2013 Camaro ZL1 Convertible will feature a 6.2-litre supercharged V8 engine with an SAE-rated 580 horsepower and 556 pound-feet of torque. That makes the ZL1 Convertible not only more powerful than the 550-horsepower Mustang Shelby GT500 Convertible, but also more powerful than most convertibles from exotic automakers such as Aston Martin, Porsche and even Ferrari.

"The Camaro ZL1 Convertible will be one of the most powerful, and most capable, convertibles available at any price," said Al Oppenheiser, Camaro chief engineer. "This is a car that is guaranteed to put a smile on your face every time you drop the top - or hit the gas."

To help handle its formidable power, and to negate the cowl shake that plagues many convertibles, the ZL1 Convertible will feature a wide range of structural reinforcements. These include a brace between the two front shock towers, a brace support for the transmission, an underbody tunnel brace, a front "X" brace and rear underbody "V" braces.

An advanced variable damping system will allow the ZL1 Convertible's suspension damping to be adjusted up to 1,000 times per second according to Chevrolet, enabling the car to respond quickly to changing road conditions. The ZL1 Convertible will also be equipped with a system called Performance Traction Management. This was first introduced on Chevrolet's Corvette ZL1 and uses a combination of magnetic ride control, launch control, electronic stability control and traction control to improve cornering performance and standing-start acceleration.

Chevrolet's 2013 Camaro ZL1 Convertible will debut at the Los Angeles Auto Show in November 2011 and will go on sale in late 2012. It will be preceded by the 2012 Camaro ZL1 Coupe which goes on sale in early 2012. Welcome to the renaissance of the pony car - giddy up!
